Gunpowder Green Tea

Curious about Gunpowder green tea? See how its tightly rolled leaves unfurl in the cup, what it tastes like, and how to brew it.

Gunpowder green tea is a style of green tea known for its dry leaves, which are rolled into small, round pellets. That shape is also why you’ll see it called pearl tea. And no, the name doesn’t mean the tea contains gunpowder. It just describes how the leaves look.

The pellet shape is the easiest way to spot Gunpowder. Strength and flavor depend on the tea and how you brew it, so use the package directions as your starting point.

01

What does Gunpowder green tea look like?

The dry leaves are rolled into small, tight pellets instead of long strips or flat leaves. When hot water hits them, the pellets slowly loosen and open up.

The shape tells you the style, but it doesn’t tell you the grade, where a particular package comes from, or how strong the cup will be. For that, check the product label.

02

What does Gunpowder green tea taste like?

Gunpowder doesn’t have one fixed flavor. Individual teas and brewing choices can make a cup lighter or more intense. Beta Tea’s Gunpowder is bold and full-bodied with roasted notes. That describes this tea, not every Gunpowder, and your cup may vary with how you brew it.

If your first cup tastes too strong, use 1 teaspoon instead of 2, or steep it closer to 2 minutes. Change one thing at a time, and you’ll find your balance faster.

03

How is Gunpowder different from Chun Mee?

Both are classic green teas, but they look different. Gunpowder is rolled into round pellets. Chun Mee has long, curved leaves, which is why it’s also known as eyebrow tea.

A name tells you the style, not the exact flavor or caffeine. If you’re choosing between them, compare the shape and the tasting notes. Beta Tea’s Chun Mee is smooth, with mild sweetness and gentle earthy notes.

04

How do you brew loose-leaf Gunpowder?

Here’s how to brew a cup of Beta Tea Gunpowder:

  1. Measure 1 to 2 teaspoons of tea.
  2. Heat 6 ounces (180 ml) of fresh water to 175°F (80°C). That’s hot, but not boiling.
  3. Pour the water over the tea.
  4. Steep for 2 to 3 minutes.
  5. Strain the leaves and enjoy.

Use an infuser or teapot that gives the leaves room to open. For a stronger cup, add a little more tea instead of steeping longer, so the flavor stays smooth.

05

Does Gunpowder green tea have caffeine?

Yes. Green tea from the Camellia sinensis plant contains caffeine. The FDA lists 37 milligrams as a typical amount in a 12-ounce green tea drink, but it notes that caffeine varies by product and serving size. That’s a general estimate, not a measurement of Beta Tea’s Gunpowder.
